DC's Home Purchase Assistance Program

The Greater Washington Urban League provides downpayment and closing cost assistance programs to first time buyers who are considered low income. The income requirements depend on household number, but its worth looking into if you make less than 50k/year as a single person. Applicants should receive their HPAP certification and know the amount that HPAP will give them BEFORE beginning to look at property because it is a lengthy process. Like FHA programs, HPAP requires their own inspection and they can be pretty stringent. I went through a minor emergency for one client trying to get an electrician out at the 11th hour to change the placement of a smoke detector to please the HPAP inspector! Red tape aside, its a great program helping DC's residents make their first home purchase.
